Poster #25 - Risk-Taking Behaviors of Canadian Adolescents With Chronic Health Conditions

Sun, April 7, 3:40 to 5:10pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

A common strategy employed by students to gain social acceptance from their peers is to engage in risk-taking behavior. Due to their pre-existing health complications, students with chronic health conditions (CHCs) are far more likely than their healthy peers to experience more severe health consequences due to risk-taking behavior. Recent studies have explored risk-taking behaviors in relation to specific CHCs (e.g. smoking and asthma; diet and diabetes); the literature now requires a comprehensive understanding o risk behaviors in adolescents with CHCs. The Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) study was used to discover unique patterns of risk taking behavior across Canadian youth with and without CHCs.
