Poster #59 - Designing MOOCs to Facilitate Participant Self-Directed Learning: An Analysis of Instructor Perspectives and Practices

Mon, April 8, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

This mixed methods study examines instructors’ perceptions of self-directed learning (SDL) and the design of MOOCs to facilitate learners’ SDL. Four instructors were selected for Zoom interviews and their MOOCs were reviewed as well. An online survey was sent to 500 MOOC instructors worldwide through SurveyMonkey with 29 valid responses. The findings reveal that instructors considered SDL as a skill that can be educated. Almost all of them believed that MOOC instructors can either intentionally or unintentionally create a learning environment to help develop SDL skills. In terms of their design and delivery practices to facilitate SDL via a MOOC, it seems that the impact is mainly on learner self-monitoring and motivation. However, its impact on students’ self-management is limited.
