This paper uses a critical lens to explore the current research on disciplinary literacy and its potential as a tool for social justice. First, the paper offers a review and critique of the existing scholarship around disciplinary literacy, by exploring the epistemological stances of the current body of literature which is primarily oriented through cognitive and sociocultural lenses. Then alternative conceptions of disciplinary literacy as a critical framework are posited.
