Institutional oppression remains a pervasive factor in the American education system. Through an “interdisciplinary” lens (Kellner, 2003, p. 58) that examines the intersections between organizational, educational, and critical theories, we can begin to name and study the underlying cause, which is the new organizational feature for which I am arguing: organizational bias. If an organization can have identity, memory, and learn, it can also hold bias. This conceptual framing brings to bear the interactions across time and space that constitute and reconstitute bias (exclusionary practice inherently caused by an organization’s reproduced social norms) on the system’s inability to serve all students. By applying this new theoretical framework, a powerful opportunity exists to interrupt the oppression ubiquitous in today’s educational experience.
