Many scholars place teachers as designers of instruction and learning, but what does it mean for teachers to design? In this paper, we present the results of a literature review on teachers and design. A broad search for the top-cited literature on the topic resulted in 40 publications concerning teaching and design. The authors applied a textual analysis to reveal core constructs and definitions within the publications, resulting in 10 strands of literature on teachers and design. The authors describe each strand in terms of what teachers design, who they design with, and why scholars framed teachers as designers. A broad and integrated perspective on teachers and design reveals new directions for teacher learning, practice, and research.
