Selecting University-Based Principal Preparation Program Candidates: Superintendents' Perspectives

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore perspectives about what superintendents are looking for as they consider “tapping” a potential school leader to enroll in a principal preparation program. The researchers interviewed superintendents from nine public school districts and examined data and tools used in their recruiting and selection processes. They found four overarching considerations that matter to school district leaders in identifying potential school leaders. They desired principal candidates who demonstrated effective communication skills, data analysis skills, sensitivity to cultural differences, and the capacity to work with and influence adults.
