In God's Image: Examining Religiosity in the Lives of Preservice Teachers

Tue, April 9, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

This research explores how preservice teachers' religious commitments and practices, what I call religiosity, inform their ideas about curriculum and pedagogy. Additionally, it seeks to understand how these preservice teachers' own experiences in public school with respect to religion serve as a guide for their ideas about how religion should or should not be integrated into public schooling. Building on the work of scholars who study the implicit curricular issues related to religion and the identity and experience work of educational scholars, this paper examines the commitments, beliefs, and experiences of a group of preservice teachers and how these elements serve as a framework for their intentions in the classroom.
