How Preservice Teachers Exercise Agency in Planning and Executing Two Distinct English Language Arts Lessons in a Mediated Field Experience

Mon, April 8, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 703

Abstract

This study examined the role of a mediated field experience (MFE) in developing prospective teachers’ sense of agency and improve their adaptive teaching in literacy instruction. We found that the four major sources of teacher agency (intentionality, self-awareness, interactiveness, and persistence) were identified primarily during the open-ended writing workshop called the “advisory” period. The PSTs made instructional adaptions to improve the writers’ workshop sessions and make their students more engaged in writing persuasive essays.
