Abstract

There is growing interest in ensuring that educators who work with the youngest children have the knowledge and skills needed to leverage the developmental opportunities possible in the early years. However, the education level of the early childhood workforce, compared with the K–12 workforce, is quite low. One barrier early childhood educators may face in pursuing education beyond a two-year college is a loss of course credits and disruption of degree progress when they transfer to a four-year college. This paper documents the approaches six states and 20 colleges within those states have taken to enable higher education articulation for early childhood educators to progress from subbaccalaureate degrees or credentials to baccalaureate degrees without losing relevant coursework and credits.
