Abstract

Mathematical definitions are foundational to students’ learning. In this paper, we present results from a design-based research study aimed at supporting pre-service teachers in learning to orchestrate definitional discussions - in which students have opportunities to reason and construct mathematical definitions. In particular, we focus on opportunities for learning provided through rehearsals of teaching. Through a thematic analysis of three rehearsals, we identify five types of problems of practice that arose. Problems of practice resulted in discussion of several specific aspects of teaching definitions; however, two forms of interaction appeared important for promoting increased participation and sense-making amongst pre-service teachers. Our results can help teacher educators prepare for rehearsals aimed at supporting the orchestration of definitional discussions.
