Where Are All of the Black Teachers? Narratives of Black Teachers in Public Education

Abstract

The effects of working in public education in urban school settings effects the lives of Black teachers whom work in them. The Albert Shanker Institute (2015) concluded that the minority teachers who were leaving the educational field left due to the working conditions, not being able to have input in educational decisions and lack of autonomy. The general problem is the factors that Black teachers take into consideration when making the decision to stay in public education is unknown. This study was conducted to gain a more thorough understanding of the decisions of Black teachers who remained in public education and their lived experiences.
