Indigenous Science Teaching: Community as Resource

Mon, April 8, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

This qualitative research project examines the teaching practice of three indigenous elementary teachers teaching science in Oaxaca, Mexico. As theoretical frameworks, I used Multicultural education and Culturally Relevant Pedagogies, in addition to indigenous education and science education. I also drew upon Intercultural Education, a framework used in Latin America developed for indigenous peoples, and a locally developed framework called Community Education. Findings reported in this paper, showed, first, a strong indigenous identity that translates into becoming a teacher to reclaim indigenous cultures; second, a counter-narrative in regard the official and established practice lesson planning, and the use of the community as teaching resource. Beyond prescribed curriculum, this project aimed to document the practice of science teaching among indigenous schools.
