Using Asset-Based Pedagogy to Facilitate STEM Learning, Engagement, and Motivation for African American Middle School Boys

Abstract

Research suggests that key interactions between teachers and students maximize cognition and learning. Transactional or asset-based strategies focus on the meaningful interaction facilitated by instructors to students and between students. Four asset-based dimensions represent evidence-based promise to eliminate the academic achievement and educational access gaps: Meaningful Learning, Learning Community, Culture, and Constructive Social Interactions. The purpose of this study serves to examine the facilitative effects of asset-based instructional strategies related to teaching and motivating African American 106 middle school boys toward STEM interests and education pathways. Students were enrolled in a summer STEM camp located at four universities. Additionally, this study highlights the important in using asset-based strategies to engage students with potential to increase academic achievement, learning, and motivation.
