The Impact of Instructional Approaches and Geographic Contexts on Education Management Organizations

Abstract

This study uses logistic and multinomial logistic regression models to examine the different educational approaches offered in EMO-operated schools across geographical scales, in 31 states for the 2014-2015 school year. Unlike previous research, this is the first multistate study of educational program characteristics associated with the geographic contexts of EMO-operated schools, controlling for a set of demographic and socioeconomic variables. Our findings reveal that instructional and curricular themes among EMO-operated schools are different across geographic contexts. Our descriptive results also show EMOs of varied types and sizes employing a variety of instructional tendencies, revealing possible strategic responses in competitive or segmented markets.
