Cultivating autonomous thinkers who are able to engage deeply and critically with social issues across multiple milieus constitutes an enduring aim of education. This paper sets out a collaborative video annotation and formative learning analytics pedagogical innovation, CoVAA, aimed at fostering deep and social learning dispositions in secondary students. We first describe CoVAA’s key learning principles, affordances and pedagogical enactment in grade 9 social studies lessons. Then, we present and discuss research findings drawn from both quantitative statistical analyses and qualitative students’ and teachers’ accounts, to make sense of the potentialities, paradoxes and pathways forward for leveraging digital collaborative video annotation and formative learning analytics to foster students’ deep and social learning dispositions in mainstream schooling.
