Examining the Biliteracy Development of Spanish/English Emerging Bilingual Students in the Upper Elementary Grades

Tue, April 9, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

Findings from this study provide preliminary information on the biliteracy development of Spanish/English emerging bilingual students in the upper elementary grades enrolled in dual language programs in one state in the U.S. They also illustrate the relationship between Spanish and English reading development and how it may differ depending on whether students’ primary language is Spanish or not. These differences need to be explored further to better understand the implications they may have for dual language programs that serve the two groups of students.
