The devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey on school districts along the Texas coast in 2017 required public school superintendents to provide strong, decisive leadership for their students, staffs, and communities. A year-long qualitative study documenting the experiences and lessons learned by nine educational leaders in a region already stressed by large numbers of minority students who were academically at-risk and disadvantaged economically resulted in findings that have implications for practitioners and policymakers in several areas of contemporary school district leadership, including finance, academic accountability, instructional delivery, personnel management, community relations, and crisis planning and communication.
