Abstract

This study examines the association between attendance at center-based care during the two first years of life and child cognitive outcomes. Regression and fixed-effect models were performed on a sample of children (n=1,830) from Chile’s nationally representative Early Childhood Longitudinal Survey. Compared to those in maternal care, children who entered into center-based care during the first 24 months after childbirth had higher cognitive scores when they were between 36 and 48 old. Children in center-based care scored higher on cognitive skills (d=.22 in the Battelle test) relative to children in maternal care). We observe that children in poor households benefited less from early center-based care attendance relative to children in wealthier households.
