Poster #3 - Colliding Worlds: The Intersection of Mindfulness and Teaching

Sat, April 6, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

We sit at the intersection of psychological approaches that see mindfulness as a positive tool that help teachers be resilient and students to focus, and critical approaches that label it as a technology used to control the classroom. Employing a Figured Worlds perspective, we draw on interviews and observations to describe how teachers took up practices in a professional development program providing training on mindfulness practices in the classroom. First we demonstrate how one teacher reflects the curriculum from the program, while the other devised moves that expanded on the scope of the practices. We contextualize these findings through an analysis of the framing of the project and curriculum, and examine the positions they afford particular teachers.
