Educating Refugees in Brazil: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

In order to accommodate new immigrants and refugees, and to prepare teachers to teach across the lines of language and culture, Brazil is investing in the professional development of its teaching force and implementing new policies for teacher education, preparation, and professional development. These new regulations include implementing culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy (CLRP). This study focuses on the implementation of the new policies, particularly the way Brazilians understand and implement CLRP. In a country that faces many socioeconomic challenges, the research highlights the preparation of teachers who work hard to develop the knowledge and skills needed to ensure equitable and socially just educational opportunities for this new student population.
