Emotional and Material Realities Shaping Young People's Higher Education Aspirations in Regional and Remote Australia

Sat, April 6, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 713B

Abstract

Internationally, the underrepresentation of students from rural areas in higher education remains an enduring concern. Despite abundant research on the aspirations of young people from regional and remote Australia, and evidence of their interest in pursuing higher education, strategies to alleviate their underrepresentation have shown minimal success. Drawing on survey data from more than 1,200 students, and interviews and focus groups with parents, teachers and students, we focus on two distinct locations to illuminate the vast spectrum of emotional and material realities that influence the formation of young people’s aspirations in regional and remote Australia. The results from the research provide a nuanced understanding of the unique and complex ways that specific contexts influence young people’s aspirations.
