Poster #4 - Do Emotional Multimedia Designs Work for Everyone in Mathematics Learning?

Mon, April 8, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Cognitive-Affective Theory of Learning with Media (CATLM) explains how learner’s emotions affect the effectiveness of multimedia learning. Individual difference include learner expertise is an assumption. As how learner expertise affects the effectiveness of emotional designs is understudied / unclear, this experimental study investigates the effect of emotional design – warm colors and face-shape like – (with vs without) and learner expertise (weaker vs stronger) on developing remembering and understanding in mathematics. These results showed that (1) the stronger group performed better in remembering, and (2) the emotional group better developed the weaker group in understanding, but not the stronger. Further analysis reveals that learner expertise determines whether the emotional multimedia design cause a facilitating, neutral or suppressing effect on mathematics learning.
