Testing the Effects of Home Visits on Student Outcomes: Evidence From Across Three Urban Districts

Abstract

Although research demonstrating the importance of family engagement for students is robust, far less has examined the efficacy of school practices to facilitate school-family collaboration. The present study used data from three large urban districts to test the relationship between implementation of home visits and the student outcomes chronic absenteeism and performance on state standardized tests. In some districts, change in school rates of chronic absenteeism and proficiency on state tests favored those that conducted home visits. This pattern was found in school- and student-level analyses. The results demand further investigation into how district level program implementation affects the impact of this practice.
