Value of Engagement: Latino and Black Male Students' Campus Engagement at Texas Four-Year Universities

Abstract

This case study explored how Latino and Black male students described their campus engagement experiences at Texas public four-year universities. We used Museus’s (2014) Culturally Engaging Campus Environment (CECE) model, an asset-based theoretical framework, to explore how institutions facilitated male students’ of color campus engagement. Through student focus group interviews, we found these students understood the benefits of campus engagement and they valued their participation in racial/ethnic focused student organizations. In addition, we found institutional leaders must be culturally responsive to help these students pursue leadership roles in other student organizations. This study adds to the research literature by encouraging institutions to consider ways to make the campus environment more supportive for male students of color to become engaged.
