Predicting Early Warning Indicators: Attendance and Course Performance

Abstract

Disengagement from school generally leads to students dropping out and can be identified early through high absenteeism, behavior problems, and course failure. Results from a large randomized control trial suggests that the use of the promotion coach, to examine data and develop interventions to help ninth graders be promoted to tenth grade, relates to an increase in ninth grade attendance. Further, fidelity to the model relates to both attendance and course performance. This study adds to these findings by indicating that there are certain promotion coach activities that relate more to attendance and course performance than others and there are school level characteristics that relate to attendance and course performance that are beyond the control of the promotion coach.
