Partnerships in Teacher Education: Expectations, Challenges, and Successes in a School Complex

Sat, April 6, 10:25 to 11:55am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Abstract

Professional Development Schools (PDS) promote connections between schools and teacher education programs. In the school year 2016-2017, seven public schools started a partnership with a teaching institute in Hawaii. The theoretical framework of the cultural-historical-activity-theory (CHAT) and applying the concept of activity system analysis provide an analytical tool to identify expectations, challenges, and successes. This research is a qualitative single-case study to understand how participants interpret and make meaning of their experiences in the complex-wide PDS. Findings illuminate necessary procedures, as well as supporting contextual factors to develop a complex-wide PDS. This research adds to the literature addressing school improvement and student learning in Hawaiʻi.
