Social media plays a prominent role in teenagers’ lives, and has a presence in contemporary schools whether formally integrated into classroom learning or officially banned from use during the school day. In addition to potentially supporting learning, it serves a social networking function for high school students and may have both social and psychological effects on their school performance and relationships. This study combines a scoping review with bibliometric analysis to examine the current state of research on social media and teenagers with a focus on what research is being conducted, how it is being conducted, and whether educational researchers are engaged with relevant research from other disciplines. Findings highlight research gaps, opportunities for collaboration, and limits with current approaches.
