The Trajectory of a Latinx Teacher Educator Who Prepares Teachers for Schools in Low-Income Communities

Abstract

I re-examine evidence from teaching as research (Duckworth, 1986) and the scholarship of teaching (Shulman, 2005) over a 30-year trajectory as an educator who builds on resources of local communities to prepare teachers to teach literacy in high poverty schools in a large urban setting. Initial analysis focused on practice; subsequent analysis employed socio-cultural and Lat-Crit theories to make visible influences that shape relationships and participation in learning communities where literacy is both content and process of instruction. That Latinx educators are under-represented in teacher preparation programs and in public schools where Latinx students are in the majority may explain why some found the content and processes of courses to be unorthodox. Findings inform faculty development and recruitment.
