"My Job Is to Unsettle Folks": Moving Practice to Theory Through Examining Exemplary Teacher Educators

Mon, April 8, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 715A

Abstract

This study examined the beliefs and practices of student-nominated faculty in Teacher Education who were deemed exemplary in their social justice pedagogy. Through phenomenographic interviews with these faculty and data analysis through open thematic coding, I gleaned insights into how these educators conceptualize and enact anti-racist teacher preparation. Findings discuss common approaches, challenges, and barriers faced while attempting to enact social justice pedagogy. Implications for teacher preparation programs writ large are discussed.
