Misconception Analysis Borrowing From Literacy to Solve Math Word Problems With Technology

Abstract

Borrowing from literacy's "miscue analysis", the author, a teacher and Ph.D. student from in Wisconsin in Literacy Curriculum and Instruction department, wanted to record a student's thought DURING problem-solving instead of the current pedagogy of reflecting after solving the problem. In using Seesaw social media, the students were able to post recordings of themselves while they are problem solving. Using Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) Word Problems, and SeeSaw, and Literacy’s Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) Students used multimodal platforms to reflect on misconceptions and began to successfully eliminate many of the firmly held discontinuities which then led to successful problem-solving strategies.
