Abstract

Research on African American achievement disparities and their relationship to engagement has become more substantial, and researchers have yet to observe the impact of culturally appropriate learning conditions on the academic engagement of African American students. Many scholars indicate the importance to capitalize on the funds of knowledge that students bring into the classroom; however, it is not fully understood how this exchange propagates the manifestation of achievement. The purpose of the study is to explore the impacts of cultural relevant teaching and verve on motivation and academic engagement. Findings obtained connections between the engagement, competence, and relatedness toward motivation--where high personal relevancy and high variability created higher motivation.
