Validation of Instrument in Evaluating Quality of Instruction Through Undergraduate Students' Academic Engagement

Abstract

Student evaluations of teaching effectiveness (SET) are increasingly used in universities all around the world. But the gulf between proponents and opponents of using SET is still wide because of its potential bias such as grading leniency. More reliable and valid instrument of SET is called. The current study validates an instrument of SET, which was using measures of student engagement instead of direct opinions of instruction. The results of multi-level confirmatory factor analyses support the three-dimensional constructs of student engagement, as well as the construct of quality of instruction through the measurement of student engagement and learning outcome. Suggestions are made in research of SET and practice in undergraduate course evaluation.
