Abstract

Utilizing qualitative descriptive research method, this study aimed to examine the home literacy environment (HLE) of young children to understand its components under the Chinese sociocultural context. This study recruited 30 parents of children aged from 3 to 6 residing in the capital city of a province in western China. In-depth interviews were conducted to gain a deeper understanding regarding: home physical literacy environment, parental beliefs and practices towards literacy learning, specific parent-child literacy activities and interactions, and parental literacy habits. Results highlighted literacy beliefs and practices were shaped by the sociocultural context. Moreover, Chinese parents adopted a variety range of pedagogical practices to support children’s language and literacy learning. Grandparents and technology had significant influence on children’s literacy development.
