Sat, April 6, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

This research investigates novice Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Elementary and STEM teachers’ identity. With the APIDA population growing exponentially, studying the inclusion of these minority populations in the teaching field is of critical importance. Using the method of photo-elicitation/photovoice interviews, this study seeks to reveal themes of teacher identity among novice APIDA elementary and STEM teachers, their initial attraction to the career, and effective forms of support, such as mentorship, workshops, and scholarships, which contribute to their continuing interest in teaching. The findings from these interviews will offer unique perspectives of this demographic which may in turn inform best practices for colleges of education as they recruit during the current crisis of a national shortage of teachers.
