Using Pictorial Gloss Accommodation With Emerging Bilinguals: An Exploratory Study

Abstract

In this paper we explore the use of pictorial gloss as an accommodation for Emerging Bilinguals. Drawing on cognitive interviews with 10 participants, we examined how they responded to NAEP mathematics items using pictorial gloss. Our findings showed that the pictorial gloss sometimes helped emerging bilinguals with understanding the local meaning of words but not with the global meaning conveyed at the sentence level in the mathematics problems.
