Multimodal Redesign of Social Futures Through Digital Storytelling: Rethinking English Learners' Social Semiotic Repertoires

Abstract

The repaid growth of new technology and digital media has offered hybrid potential modal affordances and semiotic resources for English learners to represent themselves and communicate with others locally and globally. It is urgent to call for a multimodal redesign of social futures as meanings are made through ensembles of semiotic resources across multiple modalities (New London Group, 1996; Kress, 2010). This study explores how English learners encounter one another in digitally mediated transnational spaces to invest in and mobilize their social semiotic resources to make sense of the selves and (re)design understandings of their dynamic cultural worlds.
