It is important to expand our understanding of coping strategies employed by teachers to avoid burnout, as research has demonstrated they can improve teacher-student relationships, job satisfaction, and student performance. One of the most influential ways to combat teacher turnover and burnout is by ensuring teachers have a positive sense of wellbeing. This qualitative study explores interviews with 87 teachers at three comprehensive public high schools in California, and sheds light on individual coping strategies employed to improve wellbeing. Implications highlight and examine how open-ended, personal interviews provide self-reflexive practices that can broaden our understanding of teacher coping skills and wellbeing.
