We explore the intersection of a graduate summer STEM methods course and STEM summer camp as an innovative model for methods instruction. The study examines pre-service teacher and child engagement as teaching and learning partners. Qualitative data on three graduate preservice students were gathered at multiple points during the program and the subsequent semester for enduring understandings about what it means to teach with the child in mind. Data analysis resulted in three emergent themes that reveal novice understandings about the learning-to-teach process: (1)Teaching with the disability in mind; (2) Assumptions of what is meaningful to a child and; (3) Flipping roles as teacher and learner.
