Demanding Citizenship and Humanity in School: Black Girls, Antiblack Aggressions, and Political Economies of Punishment

Abstract

Schools operate as political economies that serve to oppress and marginalize Black girls. Micropolitical economies of the classroom can reinforce whiteness and white supremacy that promotes an anti-Black culture, curriculum, and racial ideology that is devoid of Blackness and Black girlhood. Many times when Black girls are removed from school it is not because they are committing an illegal act, but it is always because someone has ascribed an illegal status to them. Therefore, we draw from an anti-Black aggressions model and Critical Race Feminism to bring to the forefront the challenges and resistive strategies that Black girls employ to maintain their citizenship and humanity in school.
