Harvesting Culturally Conscious Knowledge in a Post-Truth Era: Ghanaian and American Higher Education Collaborations

Mon, April 8, 10:25 to 11:55am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Second Floor, Simcoe

Abstract

The Higher Education in the Ghanaian Context Study Abroad (HEGC!) program at the University of Maryland is an immersive experience that focuses on collaborating with Ghanaian higher education faculty and practitioners to advance student success in the Ghanaian context. The program decentered Western approaches to higher education pedagogical and assessment practices by employing culturally relevant pedagogy, action research and empowerment evaluation. There were three major components to the program, including pre-immersion meetings, the immersion experience and the emersion experience and symposium. Authors of this proposal explore lessons learned through their immersive experience. Specifically, they examine multiple ways of knowing and ways to incorporate culturally conscious practice into higher education pedagogy and assessment, that aid in employing thoughtful global education practices.
