Representation of High-Achieving Students in Schools Implementing Cluster Grouping

Abstract

The representation of high achieving students in 43 schools implementing a cluster grouping model is described. Teachers placed students in 5 achievement categories after receiving training on the model. We examined factors that contribute to the representation of high-achieving students in the schools. Representation indices were calculated for ethnicity and free and reduced meal (FARM) status. The influence of locale (e.g., rural, urban) was also examined. Results indicate that Asian students are well-represented the majority of the school whereas White students are underrepresented in the high-achieving cluster in the majority of the schools. Native American, Black and Latinx students were also well-represented in most of the schools. Students with FARM status were underrepresented regardless of where the school was located.
