This case study explores the experiences of a fifth grade teacher required to integrate literacy and social studies during her literacy block. While there is a great deal of research acknowledging the marginalization of social studies, little research exists that includes the voices of teachers and observations of those teachers in elementary classrooms. The research question guiding this study was: What are the experiences of a fifth grade teacher when integrating literacy and social studies? Data included formal interviews, observations, and unobtrusive data. Findings indicate systemic barriers including lack of resources, and time for both subject areas, along with censorship concerns. Professional development about critical literacy and disciplinary literacy is necessary. Findings also suggest student centered classrooms support integration. .
