Encounters in Diversity: Field Experiences Outside a K–12 School Setting

Sat, April 6, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

Increased diversity among the nations youth has necessitated training for cultural competence in the next generation of teachers. Community-based field experiences can provide social interactions that lay the framework for increased diversity awareness for pre-service teachers. A qualitative analysis of one teacher preparation program’s non-traditional field experience may provide insight into how future teachers negotiate their own identity and an increased awareness in the experiences of diverse students. Implications for the structure, content and evaluation of field experiences in higher education will be discussed.
