Creating an Undocufriendly Campus: Latinx Undocumented Student Experiences With Faculty, Staff, and Administrators

Abstract

Research on college students of color has uncovered the campus racial climate and culture of institutions (Hurtado & Carter, 1997). The findings are valuable to campus faculty and staff who work towards the retention and success of students. Research on undocumented students reveal their unique challenges (Gamez, et al., 2017; Súarez-Orozco, et al. 2015; Stebleton & Aleixo, 2015). Via survey and interviews with undocumented Latinx undergraduate students at a public university in California, the findings of this paper highlight the concerns, needs, and wants as it pertains to interactions with campus faculty, staff, and administrators. Study findings and student recommendations reveal both positive and negative experiences that will be used to develop ally workshops towards creating an undocufriendly campus.
