Constructing Future Selves in School-Based Radio Fénix

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

In this paper we report on a youth radio program for multilingual students, which the students named Radio Fénix. The project was designed to support students from Mexican immigrant families in critically examining their social circumstances and expanding their perception of communicative spaces where they could represent their histories and current realities through digital media. Although there were several components to the overall research project, in this presentation we report on students’ perspectives on their development of voice, agency, and perspective on future selves through the youth radio project.
