This paper examines how situated educational research with a collaborative, strategic, and reflective methodological approach bridges the research-practice divide and advances democratic participation in knowledge construction. Three case-studies used a Community of Inquiry (CoI) model to investigate self-regulated learning (SRL) in theory and in authentic settings. A cross-case analysis indicated that using this approach tended to produce research that was methodologically multi-faceted, adaptive, contextually responsive, agency supportive, and transformational. We discuss the implications for researchers who wish to explore the complexity of situated learning, and foster the transformative potential of cross-boundary collaborations.
