Production, Placement, and Retention of Secondary STEM Teachers of Color: A Case Study of Texas

Abstract

There have been long-standing concerns about a shortage of science and mathematics (STEM) teachers. In addressing the increasing need for recruiting and retaining STEM teachers, little research has centered around the impact teachers of color could have on closing this gap. This is particularly relevant as the gap between white and black teachers continues to grow. The purpose of this study is to document the trends in the production of STEM teachers of color in Texas from 1995 to 2012, examine their placement in high-needs schools, and examine the relationship between race/ethnicity and STEM teacher turnover. The results of our analysis are counter to prior research on the attrition and turnover for teachers of color.
