In this methodological article, we demonstrate how crossover mixed analysis can be used in the context of online research. Crossover (mixed) analysis involves the use of data analysis techniques traditionally associated with the one tradition (e.g., quantitative) to analyze data from a different tradition (e.g., qualitative). In online research, crossover analyses provide a unique opportunity to analyze and interpret multimodal data (e.g., the use of hypertext, emojis, and social media integration). To demonstrate crossover analyses, we will use actual data from an online, large-scale assessment. We will demonstrate how we conducted crossover analyses (including exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression) on qualitative assessment responses. We will also illustrate the technique using screenshots from software programs that facilitate these analyses.
