The Public and Our Problems: Education and Public Scholarship in a World Out of Joint

Tue, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

This paper outlines preliminary findings from the first empirically grounded study of public scholars in education. Taking up the call made by Jeannie Oakes (2017) in her presidential address at the 2016 American Educational Research Association (AERA) annual conference for researchers to “go public,” I provide an analysis grounded in interviews with researchers who participated in the public scholar activities associated with that year’s conference. By identifying, describing, and attempting to fill relevant gaps in the education literature, this paper is a first step towards constructing a practical framework for public scholarship in education—that is, one capable of being commonly understood and commonly used by all within the field.
