Belonging is associated with increased engagement and well-being in postsecondary.
Thus we ask, how does a sense of belonging develop in postsecondary settings?
Methods: Influenced by constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 2000), we conducted focus groups with 25 individuals (5 instructors/faculty, 8 students, 12 staff) from three Canadian universities and one college, until data saturation occurred.
Results: Participant narratives led to the development of a model describing how belonging develops along a continuum of layers: 1) Affiliation, 2) Familiarity, 3) Acceptance/comfort, 4) Emotional connection/trust, 5) Sense of equity.
Implications: Results may inform best practices for educators, administrators, and others in postsecondary regarding learning environments that may support belonging for all.
